about
"In Spite of Ourselves" is the 2nd single from the upcoming Prine Songs EP.
Jon says: I began this project with Charles (Newman) shortly after John Prine's passing. We passed some time during Covid in the studio recording demos of a handful of Prine's songs, with the idea that we'd keep them in our back pocket for a rainy day. Personally, I just wanted to pay tribute to a songwriter who meant so much to me. I was playing his songs at home all the time anyway, so why not put a few on tape...
This song was an obvious choice due to its infectious charm, sing-along chorus, and just-raunchy-enough lyrical humor. At the time, we weren't quite sure who would sing the female part, but thankfully our favorite indie pop songstress Kendall Jane Meade emerged at just the right time.
We brought in the always wonderful, perennial all-star Butch Norton (of Lucinda Williams’ band) to lay down the drum track and I did my best Luther Perkins on that palm muted rockabilly guitar line, while also strapping on the acoustic for the picked parts, and then added in some dreamier flourishes on the electric as well.
Charles threw down a bit of organ and before long this pot of stone soup was sounding very tasty.
It's a fun little number, a real lesson in songwriting too, and it reminds me of the lightness and humor that Prine could bring to a song, just as ably as his more introspective and serious output.
lyrics
She don't like her eggs all runny
She thinks crossin' her legs is funny
She looks down her nose at money
She gets it on like the Easter Bunny
She's my baby, I'm her honey
I'm never gonna let her go
He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays
I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen
He's my baby, and I'm his honey
Never gonna let him go
In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a-sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite
Our noses right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes
She thinks all my jokes are corny
Convict movies make her horny
She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs
Swears like a sailor when she shaves her legs
She takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'
I'm never gonna let her go
He's got more balls than a big brass monkey
He's a wacked out werido and a lovebug junkie
Sly as a fox and crazy as a loon
Payday comes and he's howlin' at the moon
He's my baby, I don't mean maybe
Never gonna let him go
In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a-sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite
Our noses right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes
In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a-sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite
Our noses right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes
In spite of ourselves
